Suxor / Roxor 2003

That was the year that was, sucking and rocking as they all do.

SUX/ROX for 2003 - According to the traditional Trivial Pursuit Categories

Geography -
Sux - Redistricting of Texas - Senseless carving up my home town by decree of some cat from Mississippi.
Rox - Fort Worth - Despite growing up in the Metroplex, I never spent anytime in Cowtown. But I spent a couple of days there, and found it to be full of nice people and sporting a fresh downtown. (Runner up - Barcelona)

Entertainment -
Sux - Emo's . Why does the crappiest club in town book all the acts I want to see? Emo's is a Devil's Island sweat box in the summer, a festering mold pit if it rains, a dank stinking basement at all other times. And it appears to attract a certain breed of posing punk asshole. Overall, to paraphrase Mr. Poe, it is a almost liquid mass of loathsome filth and putridity.
Rox - I've got two categories of Rox here. First, I saw plenty of out-forking-standing shows. Neko on Valentine's Day, Calexico at the Hideout Picnic at SXSW, Rocket from the Tombs (at the above cursed venue), New Pornographers (again at Eholes), Cafe Tacuba at ACL Fest. Best string of shows I've seen in years. Secondly, Trouble Down South . Great friendly folks with impeccable taste in covers and tasty originals. I consider myself blessed to have met and heard them.

History -
Sux - The police state metamorphoses into a pupal stage. It's not real bad yet, but damn, when will enough be enough? I understand the need for security, but the administration's approach seems wrongheaded, wasteful and ineffective.
Rox - Pass. (No really, I should come up with something here. Uh.. It's still only seven minutes to midnight? )

Arts & Literature -
Sux - The DaVinci Code. It had been a while since I had read a bestseller. Now I know why.
Rox - Climbing to the towers of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. And "Tropical Truth" by Caetano Veloso.

Science and Nature -
Sux - Electronic voting . Delivering democracy into the hands of incompetent software goons whose sole aim is to increase shareholder value, with no oversight of code. I predict electronic voting will make people yearn for the simple days of the hanging chad and the butterfly ballot before 2004 is over. (Runner-up: CAPPS II )
Rox - I dunno. Got a new Firewire hard drive. Probably an obvious answer here, I just can't think of it.

Sports & Leisure
Sux - Texas v. OU
Rox - Rediscovering the joy of sitting on a couch with assorted mammals and falling asleep whilst a movie with low artistic merit plays. (Also, Wink.)
