Backyard Biodiversity
who us?
Whilst bar-b-cueing in my backyard a couple
nights ago, I noticed the varied shades of green. I could count about ten or
so, with out trying hard. Earlier in the day I was weed-eating, and came to the
realization that my favorite parts of the back yard are the small areas behind
the sheds. Real figs were ripening on the fig tree, the crepe myrtle dowsed the
area in pink shadows over the quilt of straggler daisy - which I had been
advised to let be a couple months ago. Behind the other shed, a lantana variant
was sprouting, and the hibiscus was spouting blossoms - unfortunately, a
battalion of ants had discovered their nectar. In other corners, some type of
ground cover sprouted spontaneously - asiatic jasmine? - as did a now mammoth
sunflower.
The front lawn is a more uniform
mix of St. Augustine, Bermuda and dandelions, but the backyard has the hybrid
native vigor.
"Man, I like the biodiversity
in my back yard" I said while turning the brats on the
grill.
"What, us?" responded a guest.
