odd times at church

what with the puking and crying and no sense of rhythm

I've been going back to church on Sundays. I enjoy the church - it is more or less the same service that I was raised on, the music is good, and I find spiritual comfort in the ritual and sacraments. There were a couple of things that sort of threw the Second Sunday in Advent for a loop.

1. A man and his eight or so year old child were sitting in the pew ahead of me. During the confession, the boy threw up.
2. The sermon - usually pretty good - sort of sucked. It was a pledge drive. Ugh. Pleas for money from the pulpit - I can stay at home and watch TBN and get that. I understand there is some need, but nothing held together, and most of the sermon revolved around a nonsensical quote from Wesley.
3. The church has a pretty good music program. The usual choir and organ in the loft were augmented by a wind ensemble to the side of the altar. The ensemble sounded o.k. - in tune for the most part. But during the hymns, the rhythm got really messed up.

However, during the eucharist, the ensemble played a truly moving arrangement of "Lo, how a rose e'er blooming " that made me cry. (I usually cry at that part of the service, but this pushed me way over.)
