Boyd
Finished this a while ago, so I
better document it.
Finished the well written biography
Boyd
by Robert Coram. Interesting on a number of levels - as a portrait of a man who
developed some revolutionary ideas on the practice of warfare, as the story of
"one man against the system" as he tries to influence the Pentagon procurement
process, and as a obsessed freak who neglects his family, sets the ties of
generals on fire, and can shovel down mass quantities of food and not stop
talking. And all along, there is no
mention of the man's politics except as it relates to his specific objectives.
Cameos by Gary Hart, Nancy Kassebaum, James Fallows, Colin Powell, and a
supporting role by Cheney. Also
interesting to read his "acolytes" continuing struggles, especially Chuck
Spinney's commentary on the current situation in Iraq at the DNI
website. On deck - Six Days of
War on the 6 Days War. (Which I forgot at work before taking time off
for SXSW. So, for no reason whatsoever, I picked up
Hell in a Very Small
Place by Bernard Fell and some leaflet by
Keegan on war that will probably just infuriate me at the brand spanking new
Half Price Books that opened around the corner.
