Media I have been consuming

Music mostly.

I've purchased a number of CD recently that have made me stop and think what I really like in music. I was explaining it a friend over a burrito the other day, and now I am writing it in my online diary. So this is how the 21st Century works.
Fox Confessor Brings the Flood - the latest Neko Case. Don't much care for it, and, being a Neko Case fan, have been puzzling why. It has some qualities I like - Neko's voice, especially when singing with Kelly Hogan. John Covertino is a great drummer. But Garth plays five notes when one would do, the lyrical content is darker than my taste, and nothing on the record seems to rock. It just bores me, mostly.
Live It Out - Metric. Now this rocks. I bought it a month or so ago, and dug it almost immediately. I thought it would fade, but still I dig it. Great singer with great songs, choppy feedback guitars, and production that is deep rather than just clever. The inhales right before the two-note siren solos on "Handshake" that drop into "...that's entertainment" under a melodic bass line. Hell, there's at least four great tunes on this CD , which is three more than industry standard. Sexy and rocking.
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - I should really hate this record, because it comes close to what I really don't like - overly intellectual, over instrumented indie-pop (a la The Firey Furnaces). But the singer can sing, and the songs are solid, and I've managed to avoid listening to the lyrics too much, so I can groove to this despite the hype.
Garden Ruin - Calexico - Well, I didn't expect this, a Beatle-esque harmonies glissando with a be boop doo wa chorus. Sounds pretty good, but I'm still trying to get a grip on why.
En Ese Momento - Cordero - See, Calexico had to do something different cause Cordero had already released their next album, only with a female singer and a more country/rock groove to accent the Southwestern thing rather than the Calexico jazz. They're playing here Saturday, but, dag nab it, so are the Darling New Neighbor (and in cases like this, you got to go to the show that has the band that you've bumped into at Lowe's while they were shopping for a vacuum.)
