TMP @ the Hole, 9/16; Katrina Benefit @ Beerland, 9/18
Licking the carpets.
One thing you can say about the impact of the
smoking ban, it really lets you soak up all the other smells you've been missing
from dank bars. Never has the pungent aroma of stale beer and urine been as
palpable at the Hole as when I visited last Friday to see the Meat Purvs do
their thing. The Hole even manufactured a concrete smokatorium for their
customers so inclined. But front near the stage was where the action was as the
Purveyors ploughed through a familiar yet highly enjoyable set - with maybe one
new song? I'm not sure. Cherilyn fetched drinks during "Car Crash" - and Jo
drank a vodka tonic. What is this? Maybe they lost the Maker's Mark
sponsorship gig? Maybe an "Absolut Purveyor" ad will grace the back cover of
Bassmaster?
Two days later, I caught a
bit of a hurricane benefit at Beerland - for $5 all the rock and/or roll you
could handle. I missed what was related to me as a most groovy set by Mandible
(who I saw a 710 a while back and liked), listened to an amped up pub rockish
set by a group of talented gentlemen whose names escape me, and, of course, The
Casting Couch. I'm happy that the guitar player looked happy with the Zeppelin
insertion.
As I helped Julie haul the
gear away, I notice the flow of folks out of Stubbs - ah yes, that is what a
Molotov crowd looks like. I dig Molotov, but, of course, I'm not married to
their bass player.
Sorry, no pics, no
sound.
