The Casting Couch at Emo's (022705) and at the Hole in the Wall
(030405)
more savory
goodness
The past week has been busy for Austin's Favorite
Indie Darlings, the Casting Couch. Sunday night they played to a good crowd at
Emo's - I counted about 75 or so fans. The first band, Stories of the
Frontier, played of set of well crafted tunes and featured some of the manliest
tamborine playing ever witnessed. The Couch ran through a set of crowd pleasing
favorites, including the epic "Pancho
Villa", "St. Lucy" (with John on in a double picking guitar fury) and
Lynn's pop confection "Mixtape ." I also
take back most of the bad things I've said about Emo's. Upstairs was a
comfortable venue with a skilled sound guy. My only regret was that the spot
with the best sound was also next to the spot where everyone threw their beer
bottles. After a noon time radio gig on KUT
Monday, in which Julie retold her dream of flying while holding a newspaper, the
Couch batted clean up in a sweet line-up at the Hole in the Wall last night.
Ethan Azarian (with Lil' Captain Travis bass player on saw & bass) started
it out, followed by the Darling New Neighbors. It was the first time I'd seen
the new DNN line-up, and they rock. The drummer played a baritone uke, the
guitarist played The Couch started their set with a rowdy version of Whiskey
Skiffle with Elizabeth Jackson on fiddle and the guy from LCT on saw. A great
set and a great crowd.
